Your Bristol UCU Pay Newsflash 2nd May 2017

1) Pay Offer Consultation

What’s your view on the pay offer?

The University of Bristol, along with nearly all other universities represented by the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), has made its final pay offer for 2017-18.

Bristol UCU has been asked to consult with its members to gauge their views. Please complete our Bristol UCU E-Ballot:

Please note: the pay offer is on the Bristol UCU AGM agenda next week, Wednesday, 10th May, 13:00-14:00. LT3, Arts Complex.

The final offer is:

  • A base pay uplift of 1.7%, with higher increases for the lower paid
  • No national negotiation or agreement on workload/stress
  • Further joint work on gender pay
  • Wait for the outcome of the joint working group on precarious employment that already is considering fixed term and variable hours contracts
  • The UCU claim for minimal rates for external examiners has been rejected.

UCU’s (along with the other campus trade unions’) original claim was:

  • A pay increase of RPI + 3% on all spine points
  • Unions would consider a two year pay offer that contains reference to both RPI – ‘keep up’ – and a ‘catch up’ element on the same basis as this year’s claim
  • Nationally agreed frameworks for actions to close the gender pay gap by 2020, to reduce the proportion of staff in precarious employment and to tackle excessive workloads

In response to the final employers’ offer, UCU is keen to hear from members:

  • whether the UCEA final offer on pay should be accepted or rejected
  • if they are prepared to take part in industrial action after a sustained ‘get the vote out’ campaign
  • whether UCU should hold a ballot on higher education pay in autumn 2017
  • Once again, please complete the E-Ballot to inform the branch position:
