Bristol UCU Newsflash, 6th November 2019

1) Strike Dates Announced; Bristol UCU Prepares

Thank you to everyone who voted in the two strike ballots. Bristol UCU’s Get The Vote Out Campaign was an overwhelming success – over 50% of Bristol UCU members voted in both USS and ‘4 Fights, One Voice’ ballots. With a clear majority of members – 77% and 74% respectively – voting for strike action, Bristol UCU now has a strong mandate. Thanks to all those who helped the campaign and helped us over the line.

Yesterday UCU announced our strike dates: 8 days from Monday, 25th November, to Wednesday, 4th December inclusive.

Branch officers met yesterday to discuss branch actions in the weeks leading up to our first day of action on the 25th.

Two events:

  • Branch Reps Meeting, Tuesday, 19th November, 13:00-14:00, 0A1, Priory Road Complex, Priory Road

School, Department, PS Reps and anyone else keen to get involved are invited to discuss and plan the forthcoming industrial action.

  • Emergency General Meeting, Wednesday, 20th November, 13:00-14:00, Enderby Room, Physics Building, Tyndall Avenue

All Bristol UCU members are invited to discuss the strike and decide the next steps in our dispute.

Further details of these meetings will be publicised closer to the dates.

Placard making and picketing line planning at the UCU office, 1D Priory Road will follow both events.

At the EGM we will also be electing our four branch delegates to attend the Higher Education Sector Conference [link] on USS on Friday, 6th December. We currently have 4 candidates: Tracey Hooper (VP); Celine Petitjean (Exec & Bio. Sci.); Mercedes Villalba (Membership/Recruitment Sec. & CALD) and Jamie Melrose (Sec. & SPAIS).

These positions are still open and there are also delegate positions to fill for UCU South West Region. Please email ucu-office@bristol.ac.uk if you are interested in standing as a delegate by Wednesday, 13th November next week.

On Wednesday 13th November, Bristol ‘Student-Staff Solidarity is a running a UCU Strike planning meeting, 18:00-20:00, Senate House 5.22:
