Bristol UCU Recruitment Newsflash, 29th February 2017: Meet UCU For Lunch, Recruit A Friend, New GS, GM in the Calendar, Twitter etc.

1) Meet UCU For Lunch

Thanks to everyone who came to our lunchtime event yesterday, member and non-member. Part of UCU’s national Recruitment Week, the event saw a range of issues discussed and questions posed.

It was good to talk in such a convivial, informal setting.

Fingers crossed the event will see a further spike in membership, building on the 9 new joiners last week. This followed our Bristol UCU email to non-members.

With over 1,000 members, Bristol UCU is the largest branch in the South West region, and one of the largest in the country.

2) Recruit a Friend

As part of UCU’s Recruitment Week, why not recruit a colleague?

As for Bristol UCU, regular ‘Flash readers know our local successes: securing better contracts for members, saving jobs, protecting the terms and conditions of University of Bristol staff, offering an alternative popular position on Higher Education policy.

For example, the proposed changes to the teaching day: without the involvement of UCU – and many a dedicated, conscientious colleague – a change to extend the teaching week by 4 hours would have been passed by Senate last week.

As one casualised member put it, ‘I joined UCU and I am now delighted to be starting the new academic year on a fractional contract giving me security of income and continuity of work. My pay has also increased significantly’.

3) New UCU General Secretary

Today UCU has a ‘new’ General Secretary: either Sally Hunt serving another term or Jo McNeill starting her first.

An exciting new chapter for UCU? Join and make sure it is.
