CALD Industrial Action Update & Survey for members with chronic illness, Newsflash 18 July 2025

1. CALD Industrial Action Update

In the days leading up to strike action starting in CALD on 9 July, university management started negotiating seriously about mitigations to their announced compulsory redundancies. During these negotiations, members were on strike for four days. On 15 July members accepted an agreement with management that offered a genuine mitigation effort where the key component was an enhanced Voluntary Redundancy scheme. In return, UCU have withdrawn all announced strike dates. That mitigation effort is currently being implemented. We maintain our industrial action mandate in CALD, but hope that mitigation will be successful in avoiding compulsory redundancies.

Thank you to those of you who donated to the CALD strike fund! This money will be used to compensate for the four days of strike action taken.

We will of course update you further on how the situation develops. We should also all thank members in CALD for standing up against the university using compulsory redundancies as a first, rather than a last, resort.
