1. International Day of Persons with Disabilities Event – 3 December 1pm
Stephen D’Evelyn (disability rep) and Emilie Poletto-Lawson (equalities rep) warmly invite you to an online gathering on The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, December 3rd, at 1pm to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. We are delighted that Mike O’Mahony has agreed to speak at our event. Mike has just had his 25 years of service to the University “celebrated” and is working very hard with us to advance equality for colleagues with a disability and/or a chronic illness. The event will also be an opportunity to be all together and follow his speech with an informal conversation. We hope you can join us. All are welcome.
If you are interested, please complete this short form [LINK]: Following that you will receive a calendar invitation.

2. Immigration Health Surcharge & other discriminatory policies on the way
You may have seen that the Government is proposing radical and shocking proposals that would make life harder and more expensive for non-UK nationals (which many of us are) to live and work in the UK. You can see the proposals and respond to the consultation here: Earned settlement – GOV.UK.
These are in addition to already difficult and expensive policies for non-UK nationals, not least the £1k per year Immigration Health Surcharge. As we communicated a few weeks ago, we have put in a claim to the university, asking that it cover the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge for staff and UoB-funded PhD students. This claim is currently being considered by university leadership and we should know more shortly. Our membership is naturally very internationally diverse, and we will continue to campaign for the costs imposed on non-UK nationals to be shared across the institution and not individualised.
